What makes a job listing look like a ghost job

A ghost job is a listing a company keeps live with no real plan to hire soon. Sometimes it is to look like they are growing. Sometimes it is to collect resumes for later. These are the eight common warning signs we check.

Posted for a long time

Listings that stay up for many weeks may be stale or collecting resumes.

How: from how long you tell us it has been posted

Reposted several times

The same role showing up again and again can mean the company never closes it.

How: from what you tell us about reposts

Very wide salary range

A range like $40,000 to $120,000 suggests the role is not fully defined.

How: we compare the top and bottom of any pay range in the text

No named hiring contact

Real roles usually have a recruiter or hiring manager behind them.

How: we look for a named person or team contact in the listing

Generic or mismatched contact email

A free email address, or one that does not match the company website, is a weak sign.

How: we compare the email domain in the text with the website you add

Evergreen wording

Phrases like talent pool or always hiring point to collecting resumes.

How: we scan for common evergreen phrases

Vague duties

A list of generic tasks with no clear team, goal, tool, or result.

How: we look for generic phrases and a lack of specifics

Level and requirements do not match

An entry level title asking for many years of experience.

How: we compare the title level with the years asked for

BE CLEAR ABOUT THE LIMITS

What this tool can and cannot tell you

It can:

  • Show which common warning signs a listing has.
  • Explain why each one matters.
  • Point you to what to check next.

It cannot:

  • Prove a company is not hiring.
  • See the company's internal plans or hiring software.
  • Know how long a listing has been up unless you tell it.

A High result means more warning signs. It does not mean the company is dishonest.

What to do if a listing looks like a ghost job

1

Check the company's own site

Look for the same role on the company's careers page. If it is not there, the listing may be stale.

2

Look for it elsewhere

Search the title and company on other job boards. The same role posted over and over is a warning.

3

Find a real person

Look for the recruiter or hiring manager on LinkedIn. A real person who replies is a good sign.

4

Ask a simple question

Ask when the role was last reviewed and what the next step is. A clear answer helps.

Never send ID documents, bank details, or fees to apply for any role. Compare pay on the Remote Salary Calculator ยป

FAQ

Ghost job detector questions

What is a ghost job?

A ghost job is a listing a company keeps live without a real plan to hire soon. The reasons vary. Some companies want to look like they are growing, some collect resumes for later, and some listings are simply left up after a role is filled or paused. Read more in our guide to what is a ghost job.

Can this tool prove a job is a ghost job?

No. It reads warning signs in the listing and in what you tell it. Only the employer knows if they are hiring. A High result means more warning signs, not proof.

How does the check work?

First a rule check looks at eight warning signs and shows your risk level right away. The full report adds an AI second look that reads the listing for vague wording and mismatches. If the AI is unavailable, you still keep your rule result.

Is the AI ghost job detector free? Do I need an account?

Your result is free and instant, with no account or sign-up. The full report needs your first name and email.

What do I get free, and what does the full report add?

Free: your risk level, the warning signs we found, and the biggest thing to check first. The full report adds an AI second look, all eight signals explained with what to do for each, questions to ask the recruiter, and a verification checklist.

Do you store my listing?

We do not store the text you paste. The AI second look sends it to an AI service so it can be read, so do not paste personal details. We keep your first name and email to send your updates. See our Privacy Policy for more.

What do Low, Medium, and High risk mean?

Low means few or no warning signs. Medium means some warning signs, so check before you spend time. High means several warning signs, so verify the role before you apply.

Why does it ask how long the listing has been up?

A pasted listing does not show its history, but you may know it. Those answers are optional. They make the result better when you have them.

Is a missing salary a sign of a ghost job?

Not on its own. Many real listings leave out pay. A very wide range, like $40,000 to $120,000, is a stronger sign.

What should I do if a listing scores High?

Check the company's own careers page, search for the role on other job boards, look for a real recruiter, and ask when the role was last reviewed. Apply only if you still want the job.

How is a ghost job different from a job scam?

A ghost job is a real company with no real plan to hire soon. A scam is someone pretending to hire to take your money or data. This tool is not a scam detector. If a listing asks you to pay or to send ID documents up front, treat it as a possible scam.

How accurate is it?

We have not measured it against real hiring outcomes, because only employers can see those. The tool shows warning signs and explains them so you can verify the listing yourself.

Does it work for jobs that are not remote?

Yes. The warning signs apply to any listing. The tool is built for remote job seekers.

Which job boards does it work with?

Any. You paste the listing text, so it does not matter where you found it.
